The Microcosmic Orbit
Submitted by Tao Disciple on Wed, 09/30/2009 - 15:50
For an undetermined amount of time men and women have sought to understand the dynamics of the inner flow of qi/prana/energy within their bodies. This extensive study of the human energy body has led to many systems of energy enhancement and refinement.
For the last several thousand years in China the study of qi has been a dedicated passion and has led (in my opinion) to one of the most sophisticated forms of personal energy work known to this planet. The developers of this Chinese system of energy work have, among other names, become known today as Taoist Inner Alchemists.
One of the main energetic practices in Taoist Inner Alchemy is a meditation known today as the Microcosmic Orbit. I have personally practiced this meditation for many years now and can confirm its reality and efficacy. The purpose of this meditation is to circulate qi in a specific energy pathway, thereby increasing overall qi flow and unblocking stagnate qi. Through various means such as breath, visualization, and intention, points along the orbit are opened to allow the qi to flow more easily.
Once the orbit is opened and free of energetic obstructions, qi then flows harmoniously in circular orbits through this channel. This can lead to an enormous amount of benefits including greater health, increased bodily awareness, heightened perceptual awareness, and a deep sense of peace. At the more advanced levels of Taoist Inner Alchemy various external qi sources are brought into the orbit such as Earth Qi, Moon Qi, Sun Qi, and various Star Qi.
The merging of inner and external qi in the advanced practices is said to create a profound union between the human microcosm and the universal microcosm. I remember vividly as this orbit began to open up and flow within me. It felt like a soothing, warm current was traveling through me. There was also an electrical sense to it, especially as the current traveled through my tongue. Each time the current passed down the front of my head and then touched the roof of my mouth, where my tongue was touching, a mild electrical jolt was felt. Sensations like this and others are signs that the qi is indeed flowing strongly.
Strewn out across various Taoist texts are many explanations of the experiences a practitioner is bound to have. While everyone may have unique aspects that they feel, there are numerous commonalities among people who practice this meditation. If you are interested in energy work, meditation, and inner alchemy, I highly recommend you look into this practice further.
May the qi be with you.
